One Year Milestone Photo Session, Cake Smash Photo Session

This beautiful Mom originally contacted me about shooting her daughter’s one year milestone and cake smash photo sessions, but it didn’t take us long to plan a little more.

After our initial consultation she sent me some images of her personal one year photo session with her mom from years ago. She asked if I thought there was a way that we could immulate some of the photos so that they could sit side by side on the table. My answer was and immediate and enthusiastic YES! Then I sent her a couple of examples from my own home where I have galleries of similar images of my family through out the genereations.

As with a lot of toddlers who come into my Birmingham, Alabama Photo Studio this one was quite shy at first. She clung pretty closely to Mom for several minutes all the while keeping a watchful eye on me to make sure I was ok. That is always fine with me because I just love to capture those cute little serious faces!

After a few minutes though, this toddler was wide open! She was curious about every single light and weight, chair and toy that I had in the studio. She crawled and walked all over the place!

We spent a few minutes getting some classic one year old portraits… and then…

… we brought out the really fun and messy part!! THE CAKE!!

The Cake Smash Part of Photo Sessions with out fail start slow and end quickly.

What do I mean by that?

Usually there is a moment of looking the cake and trying to figure out exactly what it is and why it is so sticky.

Then Mom or Dad usually will have to show their child exactly what to do with their hands and sometimes even give them a little taste.

Once they have tried it and decided that this stuff is really good, they will typically then start showing mom their hands and laughing. Kicking the cake and smearing it with their feet is the fun step that come right before my favorite part which is crawling around in it.

I capture all of the messy little details along the way!

After about 10 minutes of sugar typically there is a few moments of sitting calmly or running back to Mom of Dad (who then get messy from snuggling the toddler covered in icing)

I keep an ample supply of baby wipes, paper towels and Clorox wipes around do the clean up is usually pretty quick.
