Your One Year Milestone Photo Session

You’ve booked your Photo Session, Now what?

First: Decide if you want to do a cake smash or classic personality portrait. There is no wrong choice!! Choose what fits your family’s style!

Second: Decide on Background. You can choose between plain, elaborate or somewhere in-between. Below is an example of each: (Again, there is no wrong choice - it truly depends on your style)!

Baby girl's first birthday celebration with floral and balloon decorations, backdrop reading 'little miss one-derful.'
Baby with cake, cake smash, wearing white bow, white outfit, wooden cake stand, white background
Smiling baby wearing a gray sweater with "one" embroidered, sitting among colorful balloons with a decorative background.

If You Choose to have a background you will need to order your items before hand. My clients have purchased super cute items and outfits from Etsy, Amazon, Party City, and Target. For simple set ups you can bring your items to the shoot and we can put them up before hand.

****Please text me if you are choosing an elaborate set up so that I can grab your decor items before hand.

Details and Helpful Hints

The Cake: Most Bakery’s will make you a smash cake (and some offer it free when you order a birthday cake)

Length of Session: Plan to be here around 45 minutes. The session itself usually takes right at 25 minutes

Location: One Year Cake Smash Session are shot in my studio. I will text you the address a few days before

Dress Them at the Session: Bring their little outfit to the studio and dress them when you get here. This not only keeps the clothing fresher, it gives them a few minutes to acclimate to the setting and the light.

******Trust the Process: During the cake smash part of the session try to limit your interactions with your child. I want them crawling around and doing what comes naturally to them. The more we try to get their attention by saying their name and making noises (clapping, singing, etc… ) the quicker they get overstimulated and it’s harder to get as many shots.

IF YOU WANT MESSY: Most one year olds that are introduced to cakes for the first time do not like the sugar or the feeling of the icing on their hand. If you want a messy session you should introduce cupcakes or cake to them several times before the session. This shows them that it tastes good and when they see it at the shoot they are more likely to eat it.

If your child doesn’t like sugar or to be messy: No Worries!! Bring balloons, a favorite ball, toy or something you love - the pictures of them playing with those are precious! ALSO REMEMBER the classic personality portraits with no props, cakes or back ground are priceless!

What to expect from a cake smash: This is a fast moving session! If you are doing a cake smash we will spend a few minutes without the cake grabbing some classic portraits. Once we introduce the cake, your child will explore it for a second, taste it, have a sugar rush and then crash from the sugar rush pretty quickly. So I will be on the floor and shooting tons of shots.

What to bring: Cake, decor (if needed) and a change of clothing, diapers (and anything you normally carry in your bag. I will have wet paper towels for clean up.

Please arrive and be ready to start on time: Your session is timed with other sessions, so it is important that we start on time. Please plan for traffic, etc… accordingly.

When will I hear from you? I will email you about 10 days before your session with other details you may need, and we can start finalizing your location choice at that point. Until then please text, email or call if you need anything kristie@kristieallenphotography.com, 205 470 7195

PS - These sessions are one of my favorites. The photos we grab in this session will be cherished forever not matter what your choice of background is.
